A person who carries out the early stages of preparing raw fibre (for example Jute and flax) for spinning. Hackle-pins and fluted rollers were used to comb and soften the fibre and, in the case of jute, an emulsion of oil and water (whale oil until the late 19th century) was applied to assist the process.
