Name Chalder Term description

A measure, which varied from place to place and depending on what was being measured. When applied to grain, it was roughly 16 bolls, the boll being around 6 imperial bushels. See our guide on weights and measures.

Name Curn/curne Term description

Literally, a single grain of corn, but usually appearing as 'the third curn' or with another number, indicating a proportion of the crop; small number of quantity, a few.

Name Chopin Term description

A unit of liquid of liquid measure. A chopin was the equivalent of 2 mutchkins or half a Scots pint. For more information, see our guide to weights and measures.

Name Chain Term description

A unit of distance. A chain was the equivalent of 4 falls. Scots measurements of distance were slightly larger than the analogous Imperial measurements. For more information, see our guide to weights and measures.
