Advocate residing at Abbotsford and sometime of number forty four Abbey Road Saint John’s Wood London, who died at Abbotsford in the County of Roxburgh upon the twenty fifth day of November Eighteen hundred and fifty four made and given up by William Lockhart Esq. Of Milton Lockhart Member of Parliament for Lanarkshire and James Robert Hope Scott Esq. of Abbotsford Executors nominate [p.627] nominate to him conform to Testament executed by him on twenty third September and to Codicil of date thirteenth November Eighteen hundred and fifty four years and to be confirmed to the said defunct The said deceased John Gibson Lockhart Esq. had pertaining and belonging addebted resting owing to him at the time of his decease, the goods gear debts sums of money and other following 1. Writer in Melrose Commissioner Appointed by the preceding Remit Compeared James Robert Hope Scott Esq of Abbotsford who being solemnly sworn and examined Deponed that the said John Gibson Lockhart Esq. died upon the twenty fifth day of November Eighteen hundred and fifty four years and and that the Deponent alongst with William Lockhart Esq of Milton lockhart Member of Parliament for Lanarkshire has entered [p.629] entered upon the possession & management of the deceaseds personal Estate as one of the Executors nominated and appointed to him by Testament executed by him of date twenty third September and by Codicil of date thirteenth November both in the year Eighteen hundred and fifty four That the Deponent does not know of any Settlement or Writing relative to the disposal of the deceaseds personal Estate or effects in Scotland other than that now exhibited. That the said Inventory which is signed by the deponent and the said Commissioner as relative hereto is a full and true Inventory of all the Personal or moveable estate and effects of the said deceased John Gibson Lockhart Esq. in so far as situated in Scotland belonging or due to him beneficially at the time of his death and that that the value of the said Estate situated in Scotland is of the value of One Hundred pounds and under Two hundred pounds Sterling All which is truth as the deponent shall answer to God (signed) James R Hope Scott Ja Curle Commissioner Follows Holograph Testament referred to in the foregoing Inventory At Milton Lockhart, 23rd September 1854. I John Gibson Lockhart do make this my last Will & Testament. 1. I desire to be buried in the simplest possible way wherever I may die. 2 I request William Lockhart M.P. and J R. Hope Scott L.C. to be my executors and trustees 3. I wish Mr Christie to choose a bust and a book from my room and that £100 be paid him for a purpose which he understands. 4 I wish Mr Llawellyn Wynne to be paid £100 in [p.631] in like manner for a purpose he will comprehend and that he sh[oul]d accept a bust and book or framed print at his choice to be kept in token of my gratefulness 5 I wish my brother Lawrence to accept my Watch and a Seal also a bust & book: my other ornaments of the person to be divided between my other 3 brothers & my son in law 6 I wish books or engravings to be chosen by various friends –Dr Ferguson (who is to have one of both): Lady Gifford Lord Mahon Lord Wynford each of the Miss Alexanders Lady Eastlake Miss Shipley Mrs Wilson (Wandsworth Common) Sir H. Ellis K.C.B. John Cay Esq. Lord Robertson I Murray Esq. 7 An Antique ring given me by Sir J McNeil to be given back to him: the pictures of Sir W Scott to be added to the collection at Abbotsford. My Mothers picture to go to to Milton Lockhart: any objects which my daughter specially connects w[i]t[h] her mother to go to Abbotsford. 8.
