| Inventory of Thomas Telford, 1835 At Edinburgh the seventh day of September 11th September 1835 Eighteen hundred and thirty five years the following Inventory of the Personal Estate of Thomas Telford deceased and Deed relative to the disposal thereof were presented by Mr James Hope Writer to theSignet Inventory of the Personal Estate & Effects which belonged to the deceased Thomas Telford Esquire Civil Engineer who died at his house in Abingdon street, Westminster upon the second day of September Eighteen hundred and thirty four made and given up by John Dickinson Esquire of the House of Commons and Alexander Milne Esquire one of His Majestys Commissioners of Woods & Forests &c. being the two acting Executors nominated by the Defunct in his Last will & Settlement dated the ninth day of June Eighteen hundred & thirty four & duly proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury the seventh day of Novem- ber in the same year. Imprimis Sum due to the deceased upon account kept by him with the Bank of Scotland 1 Balance due to the deceased at 31 Decr. 1833 £1190. 16. 5 2 Sum deposited by him 7 April 1834 23. --. – 3 Do. Sum in Bond by the Proprietors of the Edinburgh Ency- clopedia (being granted by their Committee of Management acting on their behalf) to the deceased dated 10 Novem- ber 1815 £2625. --. – Arrear of interest due thereon from 11 Novr. 1831 to 6 June 1834 – 2 years 207 days 336. 18. 8 2961. 18. 8 Deduct sum received to account upon 6 June 1500. --. – 1461. 18. 8 Interest from 6 June to 2 Sept 1834 – 88 days 17. 12. 2 £1479. 10. 10 The deceased having been a partner holding four shares of the Stock of the Encyclopedia Company and as such liable along with the other Proprietors according to their amount of stock for the debts of the Company, - and as upon the final winding up of the concern it is estimated there will be a deficiency to be made up by the Partners of £100 per share to meet the engagements of the Company – Ergo deduct from the deceaseds claims against the Company his share of the deficiency which will thus fall to be made up by them to pay off their debts. The deceased died possessed of Personal Property situated in the Province of Canterbury in England which was duly given up when the will was proved & sworn under £35000. The deceased also died possessed of certain other personal Property in the Province of York to which the Executors are in the course of administering signed Jno Rickman J P Burrell J. P. At the Police Office Westminster the fifth day of September Eighteen Hundred & thirty five years In presence of John Palfrey Burrell Esq one of His Majestys Justices of the Peace for the County of Middlesex Commissioner appointed by the Honorable the Com- missaries of Edinburgh appeared John Rickman Esq of the House of Commons one of the Executors nominated & appointed by the said deceased Thomas Telford Esquire & who being solemnly sworn Depones That the said Thomas Telford Esquire died at his House in Abingdon street Westminster upon the second day of Septem ber Eighteen hundred and thirty four and that the Deponent & the said other acting Executor above named have entered upon the management of the deceaseds personal Estate under the will or Settlement executed by the deceased dated the ninth day of June Eighteen hundred and thirty four and duly proved in the Prero- gative Court of Canterbury upon the seventh day of November thereafter the Probate whereof is now exhibited and signed by the Deponent and Commissioner of this date as relative hereto and that the Deponent does not know of any other Settle- ment or writing relative to the disposal of the deceaseds per- sonal Estate & Effects or any part of them than the said will or Settlement. That the foregoing Inventory each page of which is signed by the Deponent & Commissioners relative hereto is a full and true Inventory of all the personal Estate & Effects of the said deceased Thomas Telford Esquire which are situated in Scotland, and that there is besides personal property of the deceased situated in the Province of Canterbury in England which was duly given up when the will was proved & was sworn under Thirty five thousand pounds & that the deceased also died possessed of certain other personal pro- perty situated within the Province of York in England to which the Executors are in the course of administering & which comprises the whole personal Estate & Effects of the said deceased Thomas Telford Esquire wherever situated belonging or due beneficially to him at the time of his death and that the said Estate & Effects situated in Scotland are of the value of Four thousand pounds sterling and under the value of Five thousand pounds sterling All which is truth as the Deponent shall answer to God and of which Confir- mation is required signed Jno Rickman J P Burrell J. Unto the Honorable the Lords Commissaries of Edinburgh The Petition of John Rickman Esq of the House of Commons & Alexander Milne Esq one of His Majestys Commissioners of Woods & Forests &c. Humbly Sheweth That the Petrs are nominated Executors in the Last Will & Testament of the deceased Thomas Telford Esq Civil Engineer who died at his house in Abingdon street West- Minster upon the second day of Septr. 1834. That the Petrs have made up & herewith produce an Inventory of the deceaseds personal (Estate) property to which they are ready to make oath but as they reside in London it is inconvenient to attend before your Lordships personally for that purpose May it therefore please your Lordships to grant Com- mission to the Lord Mayor of London or to any of the aldermen thereof, or to any of His Majestys Justices of Peace for the City of London County of Middlesex to take the oaths of the Petrs or of either of them to the verity of the said Inventory & to report According to Justice Dn. by Mr Alex Smith R L Dymcock Edinr. 14 Augt. 1835 The Commissaries Grant Commission as Craved to be reported within one month from this date Signed Cha Ross Follows Probate of the Will of the Defunct. I Thomas Telford of Abingdon Street Westminster being desirous of testifying my sense of the Good Will and Kindness which has sub- sisted between myself and those with whom I have been most intimately connected through life, and being of sound mind this ninth day of June in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and thirty four, do make this my last will & Testament that is to say, it is my desire that after my just debts are paid and the ex- pense of a decent funeral in a place to be selected by my Execu- tors that the remainder of my property shall be disposed of in the following manner. All my scientific Books Bookcases prints and such Drawings as my Executors shall consider suitable are to be delivered to the President of the Civil Engineer Institution for its use and benefit on condition that all those articles as well as the Books prints and Drawings already presented by me shall in case of the said Institution being discontinued be delivered to the Royal Society Edinburgh for its use. All the household furniture to be sold and its value applied to the before mentioned purposes. My Clerk and servants at the time of my decease each to have six months (extra) wages extra, and my man servant to have my wearing apparel. My Executors to divide amongst themselves or destroy all such Books Prints Drawings and papers as are not in their opinion suitable for the before mentioned Institution. And I hereby appoint the before mentioned John Rickman James Hope and Alexander Milne to be the Executors of this my Last Will and Testament and which I substitute in place of all others before the date hereof Thos Telford Appeared personally Edward Matthew Reid of No. 16 St James St. in the County of Middlesex Gent, and James Milner of No. 16 St James street aforesaid Gentleman and jointly and severally made oath that they knew and were well acquainted with Thomas Telford late of Abingdon street Westminster in the County of Middlesex Civil Engineer deceased for several years before the and down to the time of his death and having frequently seen him write and also write and subscribe his name are thereby become well acquainted with his man- ner & character of handwriting and subscription & having now carefully viewed and perused the paper writing hereunto annexed purporting to be the Last will and Testament of the said deceased the same beginning thus “I Thomas Telford of Abingdon street Westminster “ ending thus “and which I substitute in place of all others before the date hereof” and thus subscribed “Thos. Telford” and having per- ticularly observed the name “Jardine” written on an erasure in the last line of the first side thereof they say that they verily and in their consciences believe the whole body series and contents of the said will beginning ending and subscribed as aforesaid and the said name “Jardine” to be of the true and proper hand writing and subscription of the said Thomas Telford de- ceased. Malcolm Orme Notary Pub William by Divine Providence Archbishop of Canterbury Primate of all England and Metropolitan do by these presents make known to all men that on the seventh day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty four at London before the worshipful William Robinson Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Honorable Sir Herbert Jenner also Doctor of Laws Master Keeper of Commissary of our Prerogative Court of Canterbury law- fully constituted the Last will & Testament of Thomas Telford late of Abingdon street Westminster in the County pf Middlesex Civil Engineer deceased hereunto annexed was proved approved and Registered, the said deceased having whilst living, and at the time Of his death Goods Chattels and Credits and also the auditing allowing and final discharging the account thereof are well known to appertain only and wholly to us and not to any inferior Judge and that administration of all & singular the Goods chattels & Credits of the said deceased and any way concerning his will was granted to John Rickman and Alexander Milne Esquires two of the Executors named in the said will they having been already sworn well & faithfully to administer the same and to make a true and perfect Inventory of all & singular the said Goods Chattels and Credits and to exhibit the same into the Registry of our said Court on or before the last day of May next ensuing and also to render a just and true account thereof Power reserved of making the like Grant to James Hope the other Execu- tor named in the said will when he shall apply for the same.
