Coats of Arms
Images of coats of arms from 1672 to 1907 are available on this site. These images are full colour copies of the original documents, which are held at the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh.
Coat of arms images are in .jpg (JPEG) format. In general, file sizes will vary depending on whether the image is pictorial or textual,so they may take some time to download depending on the type of Internet connection.
Viewing digital images of an original coat of arms entry costs 10GBPper document, regardless of length (number of pages). Most comprise 1 or 2 pages and only some have multiple pages.
Customers should note that entries in Volume 1 (1672 — 1804)are very brief, with little genealogical information and very few illuminations of the coats of arms. In some cases legibility is poor, but we can provide a transcript in those cases.
By the mid 19th Century, entries often contain information on an individual’s descent from his grandfather or earlier, even when the individual is being granted a new Coat of Arms.
When a person is re-recording Arms borne by an ancestor, often several generations earlier, an account of that person’s ancestry back to the forebear will be included.
A description of each image incorporating search name, image type and reference number and the date and time that the image was generated, can be found at the top of each image.
