Viewing an image

You have the option to view images using an image viewer or via direct download. Select your preferred viewing method from the dropdown box on the "My Details" page.

Remember to click "Update Details" once you have made your choice.

ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk uses two image viewers on its site to give you added flexibility when viewing document images: Prizm “ActiveX”, and the ViewONE Java™ applet. Viewing images by this method will initially take longer than by direct download, but it does provide you with the tools to view, zoom, scroll, pan, rotate and annotate and print your images easily and quickly on screen.

We recommend that before you start searching you test your browser's image viewing capabilities. To do this, login to the site and then select "My Details" from the top menu. Scroll to the link entitled "Click here to test your browser for compatibility with each image viewer". This will allow you to detect any problems. To do this now, click here.

The image viewer that you select will depend on your computer and browser type:

PC Users Using Internet Explorer
We recommend that PC users using Internet Explorer use the Prizm "ActiveX" viewer as it is much faster at loading images.

Requirements - You will need to have Internet Explorer version 5.5 or above for the viewer to work. If you do not have Internet Explorer 5.5 or above installed then you can download this from www.microsoft.com/ie

When you first view an image it can take up to 10 minutes (for the slowest connections, much faster for broadband) to install the plugin and during this time a "Security Warning" will appear. The security warning will ask you to download the "Prizm ActiveX" plugin. You will need to click "Yes" to this. After the plugin has been installed the images will load faster each time.

PC Users using Netscape, Mozilla, Opera or non standard browsers
PC users using Netscape, Mozilla, Opera or non standard browsers will need to use the Java Viewer or the Direct Download method (see below).

Requirements - If your browser is not Java-enabled, you will need to download the Java component to be able to view images. This can be downloaded from http://www.java.com - the download you require is the J2SE standard edition and the JRE download for windows.

When you first view an image it can take up to 10 minutes (for the slowest connections, much faster for broadband) to install the plugin and you will be prompted with a security warning.

Apple Mac Users
Mac users will need to use the Java Viewer or the Direct Download method (see below).

Requirements - You need to have OS 9 and above to use the Java viewer. You will need to download and install the MRJ 2.2.5 plugin from http://developer.apple.com/java/download.html (some versions of Mac OSX come pre-installed with this Java support, so will not require the plugin). If you are using Netscape 4.7x, then you will also need to install the Mozilla's plugin for Apple Mac Netscape 4.7x browsers.
N.B. Some versions of Java for Apple Macintosh do not support folders, therefore the Java viewer will not work. In this case you will need to use the direct download option to view the images.

N.B. Please note that on a Mac you will need to be logged in as the "Owner" user to install the viewer and not as "Normal User".

When first viewing an image you will be prompted with a security warning asking you to "Grant This Session", click "Grant Always". The first viewing can take up to 10 minutes (for the slowest connections, much faster for broadband) .

If you have a problem with either of the image viewers which you cannot fix using the help supplied, please Contact Us filling in the form provided. Alternatively, try downloading the images direct to your computer.

Viewing Images 6

You may choose to download images directly to your computer, which is faster than using a viewer, but does not allow any image manipulation. After viewing the image in the browser you will need to save it and view it offline from within an appropriate imaging package.

If you decide to opt for direct download of images, simply select "DIRECT DOWNLOAD" under "Image Viewer" on the "My Details" page. Remember to click on "Update Details". Next, click on "View" next to the record on the results page. Remember, you will need to have sufficient credits to download a statutory or census image (5 credits per image). The page will refresh with the name of the chosen image, image reference and file size.

Click on this and you will be given the option to open the image in your browser, save it to your computer or cancel the download.

Statutory images and census images are in .tif (Tiff) format, and images of wills & testaments are in .jpg (JPEG) format. You will need to have software installed on your machine that supports both in order to be able to manipulate or print out the images. You may have a proprietory software package (such as Photoshop, PaintshopPro etc) already installed on your machine. If you do not then there are several free packages available via the Internet which will do the job. One such option is "Irfanview" available from www.irfanview.com. This program will allow you to zoom in and out of the images and also to print them out on 1 single page.
